To Incoming Freshman

Hello class of 2018!
Congrats on making it out of high school and surviving a summer of goodbyes and dorm shopping! I'm sure most of you are coming very close to your move in day (if it hasn't already passed) and I know that around this time last year I was kinda freaking out. That being said, I want to give you some advice that I wish I was given before moving into college.

  • Participate participate participate. Go to on campus events (especially welcome weekend ones), join clubs or organizations or start one yourself!
  • Don't go home. For the first month I was at school I wasn't allowed to come home and I'm so glad my parents made that rule because it was in those first few awkward weekends where I made amazing friends that I wouldn't have met if i went home every weekend.
  • If you don't meet your best friend in the first week it's okay.
  • If you aren't best friends with your roommate at first it's okay.
  • You don't have to go out every weekend!
  • Never underestimate the importance of a good movie night.
  • Find a place on campus to study and fall in love with it because you do actually have to do work in college.
  • Go to class. Skipping classes is so easy when your mom isn't forcing you out the door but it will hurt you more than that extra hour of sleep will help you.
  • The freshman 15 is a very real thing.
  • Yoga pants are the ultimate frenimy. Obviously they are comfier than jeans and a whole lot easier to put on when you're half asleep before an 8AM but they also stretch without you noticing and before you know it you wont be able to fit into the jeans you bought in September.
  • College is where you find your bridesmaids not necessarily your husband.
  • Dining hall food is not the only food - but neither is late night take out.
  • Do your laundry and don't wait until you have nothing clean to wear.
Freshman year is not easy but it will be one of the best years ever, only if you make it what you want it to be. If you want to go out all the time do that, if you want to have movie nights do that! Don't go into college thinking that it's going to be like it is in the movies. In college you have a clean slate after being stuck in high school with all of the same people and that to me is the best part. Have fun and study hard!

Music You Should Be Listening To: The Maine

Everyone has a favorite band, Lea wrote about hers a few months ago and today I wanted to write about mine because I just have a lot to say about them.

Who the hell is The Maine?
The Maine is an Alternative/Rock band from Arizona made up of John O’Callaghan, Garrett Nickelson, Jared Monaco,Pat Kirch and Kennedy Brock,. They have released 4 full length albums, 4 EPs, a Christmas album and covers for albums like Punk Goes Pop and Punk Goes Classic Rock, along with two documentaries since forming in 2007. After the release of their second album Black And White the band dropped out of their contract with their record label and started their own called 81twentythree, later signing close friends and bands like This Century, Brighton and Lydia. They just recently announced that after a 4 show tour they will be going away for the next year to write their 5th album.

How did I find out about them?
Seven years ago I went see Boys Like Girls, Good Charlotte and Metro Station with my cousins. It was one of the best concert experiences ever because it was the first one we got to go to without our parents, the headlining bands were my absolute favorites at the time and it was when I first really fell in love The Maine. They were opening the show and it was their first ever tour. Their first album came out the same day the tour started and because of that not many people knew them. I was the only one in my group who even knew any of their songs because I looked them up on myspace a few days before the show.
BABIES
As soon as I left that show I was obsessed. I later went on to see them every time they were in Massachusetts and I still cry when I see them live. The first time I met them was actually 4 years ago this week! It was a meet and greet where you basically just walk down a line, have them sign your ticket and then leave. It was so short we weren’t even allowed to stop and take pictures but I still cried in the parking lot after it was over. Over the years however I have met them so many times that I stay after shows just to talk and hang out with them. I once cried on John’s shoulder and most recently I ended up talking to Jared for close to a half hour about music and tattoos. They are the nicest and most appreciative guys I have ever met and I love them for it.

Why do they mean so much to me?
7 years is a long time and 7 years is how long I have been listening to these 5 idiots. Through their ups and downs I have been there supporting them no matter what and they mean the world to me because in a way they have been there for me through my ups and downs too. It may sound stupid to some of you that I feel this way but it’s the truth. High school kinda sucked for me and I when I had no one else I knew I had The Maine. When I was having a bad day I knew I just needed to put my headphones in and listen to them. When I needed to laugh I watched one of their dumb videos on youtube and if I needed to cry (because sometimes you just have to) I knew that Into Your Arms would do the job. I have made friends because of them and I have lost a lot of money buying tickets and merch but I also have tons and tons of amazing memories because of them.

I’m also really really proud of them. This may be another weird concept for some people to understand but I could not be any more proud of them. So many bands “sell out” in a way when they join big labels. They stop making music that they actually care about and instead they put out albums that sound nothing like their previous stuff. The Maine is not one of those bands. When they released Black And White it wasn’t them, it was good, but it was obvious that the label kind of took over the whole project. After that album the band rented a studio space in the middle of nowhere and recorded an album on their own that they felt passionate about. Their label unfortunately was not amused and band decided that they needed to release the album on their own and leave the label. Not many bands can do that and actually make it work but The Maine did. Pioneer was released in 2011 and proved that they were capable of making music on their own. For their fourth and most recent album the band decided to record the entire thing on analog tape without computer editing, giving to album the unique energy that can only come from five people playing in one room together. They proved that they did not need a record label or their music on the radio to be a success. They have sold out shows all over the world not because they conform to what’s popular now, but because they care about their fans so much that they put everything they have into making music that they are actually proud of.

Forever Halloween is one of the best albums I have heard in a long time and it makes me excited for their next one. If you haven’t already you need to check them out. Seriously, do it. You’ll thank me later.
Here, I'll even give you a song to listen to. It's my current favorite song by them and it is off of the deluxe edition of Forever Halloween, it's called Bliss.

Enjoy!

Robin Williams Appreciation Post

I missed a post (or two?) last week for Disney week and after the news we all got yesterday I need to take a minute to talk about Robin Williams.

Robin Williams was, for a lot of us, pretty much the voice of our childhood. As the blue genie in Aladdin, Peter Pan in Hook, the kid who was trapped inside Jumanji or the crazy professor who created Flubber. As I grew up I loved him in movies like Dead Poets Society, The Birdcage and so many more. He was one of the funniest men on the planet and he will continue to make people laugh for years and years to come with his movies.

Only a man like Robin could touch so many people that all night my entire twitter timeline was nothing but love for him. He made everyone happy even when he wasn't happy himself and I think that is why this is so shocking to everyone. Depression is such a scary thing and this proves that you never know what is going on in someones life.

But instead of talking about the way he died, I want to share some of my favorite Robin Williams moments.

(funny because he did not grow up to be bigger than him)

Why the Park Hopper is the Way to Go

So this post is being written at 1:00 am after a very long day for me. As you are all aware I am in fact in Walt Disney World (if you see me, say hello! I'm the girl with the thigh tattoo and nose ring!) and that means days filled with parks and other forms of amusement. Now today was a new Disney feat for me and my sister. We decided to fully take advantage of our park hopper option and visit all four parks today. Here's a recap of my day:

The day started with a lovely breakfast on Disneys Broadwalk at Kouzzinas by Cat Cora. I'll be doing a Disney food recap eventually so I won't go into detail but it is scrumptious to put it mildly.

Then we returned to our room and decided we didn't feel like sitting by the pool (after all, the water is about as hot as the air outside). Any who, we missed seeing the Indiana Jonea stunt show yesterday during our stay at Hollywood Studios so we decided to hop on over and catch the show.

Then it was off to Animal Kingdom where we went on two rides, saw minimal animals, and got poured on. I should have known it would rain though...I was with my aunt an everytime she goes it pours on her.

Then after a long shower (and I mean one in the hotel, not outside during the storm) we had dinner in Epcot in Germany and was able to catch illuminations. Rad rad rad.

Now because it is summer time, Magic Kingdom is open late until midnight so my sister and I figured why not. We went over for a little over an hour, did three attractions, and had no wait time. Can't beat that.

As you can see my day was full. Now I don't like to do everyday this packed, but it really wasn't hectic at all. We are staying at a resort between Hollywood Studios and Epcot so those two parks are easy to get to. Hell, dinner in Epcot can be a nightly occurance for us. The hopper pass always us to come and go as we please during our time here and it also allows us to not worry about missing an attraction one day since it doesn't have to be our only day in said park.

Anywho everyone is snoring besides me. Tomorrow is our planned day in Magic Kingsom so wish me luck.

Much love,
Lea
P.S. I can feel the Disney magic rn

Adding Disney To Your Wardrobe

Lea may be hanging out with princesses and eating mickey waffles while I'm stuck going to doctors appointments and working at a supermarket, but that doesn't mean that I can't still add a little Disney magic to my days here in Massachusetts. One way to do this is to add Disney touches to my outfits.

So many Etsy shops have been opening full of Disney themed merchandise and stores like Hot Topic and Forever 21 have Disney Collections so this should be easy right? Well it depends. Everyone has a different style, one person may not want to be as obvious with their Disney fashion while others would love to wear Little Mermaid leggings every day of the week. Or maybe your going to be visiting the parks soon and are looking for some unique preppy ears? Well here are some of my favorite Disney touches that you should be adding to your closet!

1. Bows Bows Bows!
By now you should know that I love bows and I personally think they are the perfect way to add a small Disney touch to any outfit without it being totally obvious. Some bows are simply the color scheme of a certain character or movie and others are more detailed and beautiful. Some of my favorites are available on TaylorsThingamabobs

2.  Preppy Park Ears
I am 100% obsessed with these Lilly Pulitzer Minnie ears made by SailBows. I want to order a pair of my own but I'm not going to Disney any time soon so I personally can't justify it based on how little my paychecks have been lately. The ears are custom made, so so pretty and are guaranteed to make you stand out in the parks!

(If you aren't a fan of Lilly patterns but still want a unique pair of ears you need to check out ShopHouseOfMouse on Etsy. She makes amazing ears including some themed after different movies or characters.)

3. Pocket T's
One of my favorite new trends is the pocket T-shirt. They are perfect for days when you don't feel like getting too dressed up but still want to kinda look like you tried on an outfit. So many Disney versions are available on Etsy or you could even make your own using any Disney fabric!

Disney Week is Back!

So you know how I said that Lea and I had some exciting stuff planned for August? Well here's part one!

Lea is leaving tomorrow for Disney World and while I'm trying to convince her to stuff me in her suitcase and take me with her, we decided to make this week another Disney themed week  This one is going to be a little different from the last one because one of us is actually going to be there but I will try my best to make content that is just as good while I'm still stuck here at home.
In case you missed it here are our posts from our last Disney Week in May!

How To Successfully Pack For A Trip To Disney

So as you could tell from Kasey's post yesterday, we are doing another Disney week. Now everyone can celebrate and rejoice! Please bare with me seeing as I am actually in Disney World as we speak. My formatting will probably be messed up and my pictures not centered. Again, my apologies.

AND ON TO THE POST.

Disney World is a magical place. You get off the airplane and the magic is already starting. You are escorted to the Magical Express and your journey to oasis behind. Disney movies are playing and ads for different places to eat the park join in. Hell, your luggage even shows up in your room without you grabbing it at baggage claim. Now how cool is that??!?

However, one thing alway sucked about Disney World and that was packing. I was the definition of an over packet from a young age. I always thought there would be something I would need or something I just couldn't live without for a week. Nine times out of ten within a day of being at the hotel I would realize how much I didn't need all this shit.

(How not to pack)
(PSA: Humans don't belong in luggage)

Anywho, here's some helpful hints I learned on how to successfully pack.

1. Make outfits. You know how you pick out your outfit every morning? Do that for seven days. Lay them all out, underwear, shoes, socks and all, and then pack this way. You'll eliminate all the extra clothes you might have thrown your suitcase.

2. Health and Beauty. This part is simple. For Disney, soap, shampoo and conditioner is already provided for you at the hotel. Take advantage of this and make your load lighter. Also pack your health and beauty the morning of the trip. After you're done putting makeup on, throw it in the suitcase, etc. this way, you'll have everything you use in the bathroom.

3. Limit your Jackets. This should be common sense since we are in the south and it is Florida but I still get a laugh when I see my mothers suitcase. Pack ONE (maybe two) jackets for your trip. You probably will use them once and call it a day. However, they are helpful when restaurants are freezing.

With Disney, though I hate to say it, it's not a fashion show. You don't need so many options to wear so you might as well limit it. It saves me about 20 minutes in the morning and I"d like to use those 20 minutes for extra sleep on my vacation.

Any who, there will be more live posts from Disney from me so stay tuned!
Much love,
Lea
P.S. Again, this is mobile blogging so best with me.

July Favorites

I feel like I just posted my June Favorites yesterday! How is it already August???
July always flies by and it was definitely a crazy month for me. Between getting my wisdom teeth out, the company I work for going on strike, my birthday and finally being reunited with my friends from school, July had so many ups and downs but also tons of cute things and good music. So here are some of my favorites from my favorite month!

Nice is Just a Place in France by The Betches
This book was recommended by Amazon after I finished reading White Girl Problems and I bought it as a beach read before going to Cape Cod. It is hysterical. If you liked White Girl Problems this book is perfect for you. It's snarky and bitchy but you can't help but relate to it. Sometimes so much so that it's embarrassing. Would I take it seriously as a "self help" book? Probably not, but I still highly recommend it.

This dress from Francesca's
This dress was at the top of my birthday list after seeing it online and after trying it on in the store I almost bought it for myself. Luckily my parents gave it to me as a birthday gift and I am obsessed with it. It's great for giving a presentation in class or just going out with some friends. Add a statement necklace and some cute heels and it is perfect! (also it is not that short on me or probably any normal, not model sized person)
You can find it online here in blue, pink or white!

Bows & Kites
I love love love bows. I usually make my own but this month a found an online store called BowsAndKites that sells adorable bows. Some have simple designs and others are inspired by designers like Lilly Pulitzer or Kate Spade. You can even get your monogram put on them! The best part is that they are pretty cheap when compared to some of the same styled bows on Etsy. I just put in an order for for a few of them including the white Kate Spade one pictured above.

Candidly Nicole
I love almost all reality shows. The good, the not so good, and the super cheesey. My new favorite one is Candidly Nicole on VH1. It's half scripted and based on Nicole Richie's hilarious twitter account. I love it because the whole point of the show is basically Nicole making fun of herself. She can get away with joking about her past because she is actually a successful fashion designer, mother and wife (to Joel Madden!!!) unlike her ex-BFFs who are still trying to stay relevant with failed attempts at come backs. If you haven't seen it yet you definitely should check it out!

Anberlin -Lowborn
Anberlin has been one of my top favorite bands since I saw them open for the All American Rejects in 2009. Their latest, and unfortunately their last, album came out this month and it is so so good. If you like rock or pop punk then you really need to check them out. I can't believe this is their final album but I can't wait to see them play their last show in Boston in a few months!

Those are just some of my favorites from July. Summer is flying by all of a sudden and I can't believe that Lea and I will be moving into our dorm in just a little over a month!
What were some of your favorite things from this month? Let me know in the comments! Have a great weekend!

So Where Have I Been?

So this past month the posts have been more far apart between myself and Kasey. Personally, I've been working full time hours as a part time hire so I've been pretty tied up with that. Also, I'm going to Disney World within the next couple of days so I've been tied up with trip planning. And of course, back to school stuff including collecting junk for the dorm and a job hunt. Since July was a shitty blogging month for me, I'm going to make more of an effort come August. I hope you all are having a lovely summer and the heat isn't getting to you.

Much Love,
Lea
